The wall of cloud is as immense as the sky itself. It stands and warps the ceiling of earth into its dark steel abyss. The winds blow any sense of time or space out of the minds of those in awed witness. Speckles of rain hit your face, signalling the incoming shower to come. In such a chaos of storm you would not normally look up from shielding yourself from the peppery pelts of drops and gusts. Like a rowboat lost in an ocean, the fear is not the wave that topples the vessel but the chasm and eyes of the depths below it. The wait of its coming too much to bear. Thrashing around in water, every time legs kick to keep afloat, anticipations of contact beat and thunder in your pulse. Whether on land or sea, the one who looks up from the tempest's hail, will, for a moment, see through. They will see it. You will see it. Wreathed in shadow and cloud and rain and fog. Barely visible but for a moment. It’s eyes, sirens of adrenaline and fear in even the bravest souls heart. For this is not an earthly fear that can be overcome by the bravery of mere mortals. Its terror is deeper than the memories of the womb. It paralyses connection to a safe world that is constructed for us, by us. It plunges you into a cosmic ocean, giving glimpses of what is actually there. It is taller than any mountain. Skinny and black. Long limbs look like spider legs designed to pincer hope. Its face, white like the moon, skull like, human, with hollowed eye chasms deeper than space. It looks straight at you. You are not hidden. Even though you are as small as an ant, it spots you through the cloud. There is nowhere to hide. It wont come for you today, but it will always be there, in the storm. Wherever and whenever the skies darken and cluster. It will be there. For it must hide. Not because it is scared. But because it wants its horror to be just for you. A personal drip of torture that worms its way into your mind when you sleep. When you dream. You have no rest, because you cannot share it with others. No shared burden lifts your spirits through camaraderie of understanding. It isolates you in the sea of your life.
